Review:
Knives Out is a 2019 murder mystery comedy (in the style of film classic, Clue) directed by Ryan Johnson. Knives out is what some would call a hilarious romp. Excentirc millionaire writer Harlan Thrombey is found dead by apparent suicide in his ancestrial home the day after his 85th birthday party. The case seems pretty clear, or does it? The presence of legendary detective Benoit Blanc (Danial Craig) suggests otherwise. Blanc suspects that all is not what it seems as he starts to piece together the mystery with the help of the local police force and his very own “Watson”, Marta, Harlan’s private nurse and closest friend.

The film has an all star cast including Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette. The acting in Knives Out is absolutely phenomenal. Almost none of the Thrombey family is likable, but they’re all intensely interesting. Audiences will love to hate them as they strive to profit off of the death of their beloved patriarch while trying to deny blame in his death.

Knives Out explores themes of racism, classism, and power dynamics caused by money. It masterfully weaves a tale of mystery and suspense that constantly keeps the viewer guessing by subverting typical whodunit tropes. It’s extremely funny while maintaining a careful balance of laughs and suspense. Knives Out is a fun mystery movie that has one of the most satisfying endings in murder mystery history.

This mystery is “a doughnut hole in the doughnut's hole. But we must look a little closer.”
