Name of the movie you are reviewing: Philadelphia
Philadelphia is a movie that focuses on the AIDS epidemic that struck the world in the 80's. Andrew Beckett (played by Tom Hanks) is homosexual. He keeps this hidden, however his employer fires him after they find out about his diagnosis of AIDS and must hire a homophobic lawyer to represent him in court for a wrongful dismissal suit.
Review:
Absolutely heartbreaking, but brilliant film. As always, Tom Hanks does a superb job at portraying an innocent victim of the unfortunate epidemic that swept across the world. This story is based on a true story so members of the LGBT community may find this film quite moving or at least, interesting. Tom Hanks himself stars as a man who has AIDS from sexual intercourse, however it is kept hidden from his employer. However, issues arise when his employer finds out and sacks him, but finds another way of firing him without telling him that it's because of his AIDS diagnosis. This leads him to start looking for a lawyer to help file a wrongful dismissal suit. Unfortunately, nobody other than a single homophobic lawyer ( played by Denzel Washington) will represent him. Denzel Washington is also brilliant throughout the film, with his character eventually realising his mistake and his homophobia fades away into a friendship. There is emotional scenes throughout the film. The choice of music couldn't be any better, with Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia opening the movie. The ending is especially sad, so if you watch it prepare to cry a bit. I don't cry much at films, but I balled my eyes out with this one.
Would you recommend this to other users? Definitely, 100%. Watch this film. It's a testament to how far we've come as a society since the AIDS epidemic struck.
