In recent weeks I have been seeing an increased number of games updated.
With every update comes the demand for an updated mod.
But why
For example, as many know, I am a Pixel Dungeon developer and I make a custom version just for Sbenny -
forum.sbenny.com
00-Even is the developer of Shattered Pixel Dungeon (a mod itself of Watabou's Pixel Dungeon).
In the past few weeks 00-Even has released several significant changes: weapons system, full screen, animated background, bug fixes and more.
Fans of the game, particularly my mod, are always pushing for me to update as soon as 00-Even does.
While I am happy to oblige this is very time consuming and with rapid back-to-back releases by 00-Even I let gamers know I was skipping a few until the big 3.2.4 release.
This sort of modding is a hobby and a labour of love.
However, there's another sort of modding that on the surface may seem alike, but when examined closer is very different.
The addiction modding. That need to have thee latest version.
Sometimes an upgrade is mandatory, especially with clients connecting to servers, however, in many cases this simply is not true.
More and more I am seeing games demanding upgrades or simply being upgraded with no apparent reason.
One game I recently looked into updating has received 8 updates in a month yet the game is unchanged.
The size of the game has gone from 28mb to 240mb, nearly 10x larger, but the game is the same?!
Upon examining the game what I found is that tons of security, ad's, analytics, spyware, malware had been added, and that the game is burning up battery life, using massive bandwidth, consuming storage, and robbing users of personal data, but no actual update for the game.
I declined to do a new mod because a new mod isn't required.
If the only reason for a mod is because of the addiction to have the newest version then there is no reason to mod the "upgrade".
Unfortunately, the marketing industry long ago learned about human nature to have something new, or newer, even if it isn't. Ad providers and spy's are no different, and today they are even worse.
This unfortunate trend is not going to be stopped by modders.
Modders only try to modify what is already there.
It is the gamers and especially consumers who have to send the message, if you don't knock off the ad's and analytics and spying and malicious code then you won't use or purchase the game.
This is especially true for games demanding a Google or Facebook account in order to play as they are using your game addiction to spy.
