Mystery of the week
Millennia ago, the entire continent of Hallingard shook to its very core, as a great abyss carved the land in half, swallowing whole entire nations. From the darkest depths of this chasm, a nightmare made flesh clawed their way out, fulfilling the prophecy of the mad seers; the final reaping was at hand, and we were the harvest. Vampires, profane beings from the Great Other Nabu-nazir, poured out of their cursed home below, bringing humanity to its knees. As hundreds of thousands died to the unrelenting horde of abominations, it seemed as if the lights of Hallingard were being snuffed out, never to be seen again. Humanity was at its lowest point since creation, but alas, from great tragedy arose a great miracle.
Ingegerd, daughter of blessed Borghild, rallied the disparate and scattered forces of men into one last stand at the stronghold of Strommrang, in a gamble that would either save the world or be its grave. For weeks, Nabu-nazir and his lieutenants battered and hammered the high stone walls of the castle, only to be beaten back and forced to regroup. Hundreds of abominations fell at the feet of Ingegerd, who fought at the walls wielding the longsword Oblivion.
As one of his first lieutenants, Izdubar, the Divine Retribution, was in command of most of the abominations’ forces. The elder vampire lord conquered many of the cities of humanity during the last decades of fighting, bringing many a slave to his collection. But Izdubar’s ambitions are great, for the lord of retribution has had centuries to begrudge his position under the shadow of the Great Other, Nabu-nazir. How long will the abomination do all the fighting and receive none of the credit? When will Izdubar ascend to become his own master?
Ahimelek, the Divine Vengeance, controlled the vast majority of the slaves of Nabu-nazir’s vampiric underworld realm. The youngest vampire to be inducted into the circle, the lord of vengeance was once a human in the long-lost kingdom of Frisia, but when his human bride was killed by the Great Other himself and the man was forced to become a vampire, Ahimelek’s emotions died with his past self, as only the hedonistic and libertine version of his character remained. The abomination has hundreds of thousands of pleasure slaves, eager to serve him and escape the eternal punishment of either Izdubar’s army or Allatu’s dark experiments. After all, what need Ahimelek has of love when he can have pleasure at a mere command?
Allatu, the Divine Wrath, is rarely seen above ground, but hardy men shudder and infants cry at their cribs under the mere mention of the name of the wrathful vampire. When the divine wrath takes to the field, the hounds are always at her side. Formerly human beings, their bodies were broken, reshaped, and broken again until what we know as the great hounds of Allatu were born, hunting down their previous brothers and sisters from humankind to their master’s joy. The vampire takes pleasure in experimenting with humans, taking them apart to see what’s inside, but Nabu-nazir’s plans of extermination are a bothersome nuisance. How can the divine wrath continue her work with no subjects to play with?
As the Great Other begins what is to be the final assault on the walls of Strommrang, the abomination’s hubris is its downfall. As the great lord of the vampires is funneled into a trap without the majority of his forces, the hero Ingegerd takes off Nabu-nazir’s head with Oblivion for all his cohort to see, breaking the cohesion and discipline that the horde barely had without being beaten into having it. From afar, the forces of humanity rejoice as a third of the armies of the late vampire lord strikes their own compatriots, blocking the retreat of the forces from Strommrang and annihilating the host of the impure creatures. In what was a miraculous display of cunning, Ingegerd’s heartfelt appeal managed to convince one of the divine vampiric lords into their side, that lord being:
1. Izdubar
2. Ahimelek
3. Allatu
