Scratch is a mystery game with dashes of physiological horror where a small town, recovering alcoholic detective and his new partner from the big city, Vasquez, team up to solve a murder of a group of young women near a secluded millionaire's estate.

Review:
Scratch is an interactive game where the player takes control of a small town detective, down on his luck. A recovering alcoholic, the detective must weight his decisions lest he and his partner get burned. The story starts with the detective and his new partner, Vazquez, investigating a tip from an anonymous source about a murder site in a secluded location. The detective is greeted to the sight of the dead bodies of young women, all wrapped in white cloth, murdered in a ritualistic manner. Tire tracks show that a vehicle was near the site recently. The problem? The tracks go deeper into a secluded millionaire's estate, who is not fond of visitors, and Vazquez just called the FBI, a mistake, who will be swift in cutting both of the small town detectives from a case like this. The detective realizes he has until the next morning to catch a lead in this case so both the detective and Vazquez are in a race against time from the beginning. Both individuals have a past that haunts them; Vazquez had an incident with the police force back in the big city; the detective's past, however, is more malleable by the player.

On the ride to the hermit's property, both partners share their past and become closer, if only a little. The detective's father was also a detective before him, who was tormented by many demons in his years in the force. What demons? You can choose. The player can choose between 4 cases where the player's father was involved, all of them disturbing and brutal in their own way; the drowned girl, the fingerless man, the B-movie starlet or the poisoned children. In my first play through, my character's father was involved in a case where a politician's son, Junior, murdered a young girl. Junior was a young man, deviant and degenerate, who committed every depravity to get his father's attention; an act that always failed, as the senator had a team of aides to push these kinds of matters under the rug. But Junior was determined to find a way to blackmail his father, so he hired this young woman, a wannabe actress who was hired to take part in a fake murder video. But Junior took it too far and girl ended up drowning. The detective's father made his young child watch the video over and over until he, already drunk, forced him to drive his car to the senator's house. The child waited a long time, until the father came back drenched from head to toe in water, with a smile on his lips. The news later said it was an accident, that Junior slipped and drowned in a bathtub, but it was obvious what happened. Years later, on his deathbed, the detective's father gave to his child the tape where Junior murdered the young girl, to use it if the senator ever tried to subvert justice again. As the detective says to Vazquez “There’s right, wrong, and the law. When you’re lucky, the law and doing what’s right are the same, but that isn’t always the case.”

Later on, arriving at the house, the player is introduced to the suspects in the hermit's house. The hermit himself, the couple with the child and the group of young people whose car had a problem on the road to a trip. The detective and Vazquez interview the suspects, asking questions about their presence in the house and the murder of the young girls. Suddenly, the lights go out, a loud thud is heard, and a body appears in the middle of the house. Trapped with a murderer and having to deal with his alcoholic recovery, the detective has until the morning to discover who is guilty, who is innocent. But first, he must survive the night at the cabin, lest he become another of the murderer's victims.

The pros: Scratch is reasonably long and a fun game. The mystery of who is the murderer is also malleable, as his identity changes depending on the choices. Anyone can be guilty in the cabin and the player has a hand in shaping who it is. Another mechanic that is worth mentioning is the alcohol mechanic. As the detective is a recovering alcoholic, he needs to have a sip every now or then, as quitting cold turkey can kill him. The player will face the dilemma of how much to drink; too much and you lose control of your senses, too few and you risk your life. Another thing I liked was that in a certain part of the game, you can choose why the detective became a detective in the first place; what case made him notorious enough to earn his place in the sun. Choosing the bodyguard to a celeb choice opens up mentions of a romance, while choosing the bandits on the train touches on the relationship of the detective and his father.

The cons: The game doesn't have romance. Like Highlands, Deep Waters, the game is disturbing and brutal, so romance would not be appropriate in the game. You can have some mentions of a romance in the past, but it's only in the background.

I consider Scratch a brother to Highlands, Deep Waters. Both are disturbing, brutal and scary. If that's your cup of tea, you will love this mystery book.
