Stellaren is a space sc-fi visual novel game created, published and developed by ninedux and was originally developed into five separate games before it was repurposed into a single game. It is the first installment of the Stellaren Trilogy.
Review:
Ninedux brings fans of the visual novel genre Stellaren, a game with rich storytelling, world building and characters all for the measly price of 0$.
Stellaren is set in a futuristic setting akin to the likes of Star trek dashed with sprinkles of Cowboy Bebop's realism. It follows a young man named M a mechanic who one day stumbles upon K the captain of one of the NGC ships and tags along on her many space adventures alongside a rag-tag group of badass females. The story never drops in quality in any of the arcs they main characters go through whether it'd be escaping from rebels, infiltrating their base of operation, getting kidnapped (happens often enough) and finding out the mysteries behind a new threat looming over the stars.
The story is mostly told from M's perspective with glimpses from the rest of the cast's views but one odd thing you'll find out later down the game (spoilers for the last Act) is that the perspective suddenly changes from M to literally everyone else. Granted it's because of plot reasons but after that turning point M just becomes one of the cast members and its gonna take a while to get used to it.
The cast of characters in this story will resemble most the tropes found in anime but don't let that stop you from delving deep into their internal workings as a person and find out their struggles and conflicts that brew up from within. But I will say their outward appearances lack the flair their personalities bring so it's quite odd to read an emotional scene with generic character models on screen with not much of any animation.
The old school space shooter mini-game has returned in the form of quick but brutal battles in Stellaren with upgrades that tbh don't really matter much except for a few instances where you're clearly informed about you being under-leveled by destroying you the moment you enter battle. Don't expect to get really immersed into the battle system as it's just something to spice up the visual novel side of the game.
Would you recommend this to other users? Overall if you're looking to sink in your teeth into a great story told in visual novel format you got yourself a new game to look forward to but for those that expect exceptional game mechanics, great artwork or voice-acting your sorely out of luck.
