Review:
A great movie about love and loss and humanity's ability to endure. Guy Pierce plays a brilliant Victorian mathematician named Alexander, who upon proposing to Emma the love of his life, witnesses her untimely death at the hands of a mugger. He then sets out to build his miraculous time machine in an attempt to go back in time to save Emma's life, however, upon returning and attempting to change the past Emma passes away in a different manner. In his extreme distress, he then travels to the future to see what lies in store for humanity. While some bits of the future fascinate and intrigue Alexander, overall he finds the future and technology overwhelming. At one stop in his tour of the future, loud sirens can be heard going off, with fires and chaos in the background, and several uniformed officials try to convince an extremely confused Alexander to follow them to the underground shelters. When he questions the officials as to what is going on they inform him that the moon is breaking apart. Alexander escapes the officials and returns to the safety of his time machine where he propels at an extreme rate 800,000 years into the future. When he gets there he finds modern civilization completely in ruins, with only tribal societies remaining. At first, the people seem happy and peaceful until he discovers they are plagued by vicious monsters that drag away members of the tribe. Alexander soon discovers that the vicious creatures are in fact the evolution of the people that went into the underground bunker 800,000 years in the future. He uses his intellect to help defeat the creatures and rescue the people who live on the surface.
