Name of the movie you are reviewing: the witcher (netflix original, season 1)
follow the stories of geralt of rivia, yennefer of vengerberg, and princess cirilla in a world filled with monsters and magic. sometimes solitude is far better than getting involved in the affairs of humans.
Review:
i have not played the games or read the book, but i have a few friends who have and they all seem pretty pleased with this show so i assume it's close enough to the source material. i do know one friend complained about triss's hair not being red and geralt's eyes not having cat-like slit pupils, but she did admit that she was being nitpicky.
i will avoid spoilers in this review, but will say that the timeline is non-linear, but as you continue to watch things begin to make sense. my husband and i figured it out around episode four. it wasn't that difficult to follow once you figured out which stories fit where, but if you google "witcher timeline" you can find several fan-made graphs and charts that explain it further if you need (though i would avoid doing that if you're not wanting spoilers).
the first season hits the ground running with a scene where geralt is fighting a giant spider-like monster in a swamp. it really sets the scene for this series; it's going to be dark, action-packed, and very interesting.
the special effects are very nicely done, you can tell there was a high production value. i love the costumes, as well. i read somewhere that henry cavill (geralt) would often wear his costume longer than necessary as he wanted it to look properly worn. his portrayal of geralt was fun to watch, especially when geralt had to deal with jaskier (joey batey). i also enjoyed that they didn't make the characters speak in super flowery language as sometimes tends to happen in shows set in a medieval setting. that being said, the f-word is used quite a lot, as well as other swears. there is also a LOT of nudity and fairly explicit sexual situations.
another thing i liked is that there's plenty of diversity. elves come in all skin tones, for example.
i do also want to warn for the following: images of slit wrists/attempted suicide, incest, infanticide, violence and gore.
Would you recommend this to other users? yes, especially if you like fantasy shows with medieval type settings like game of thrones or lord of the rings.
Rating(1-5):
