When I was growing up I always heard, "Listen to your heart." As a teenager, trying to listen to my heart was quiet confusing especially when my head was saying something else. One day my father told me to "Listen to your head, your heart will heal." That hit me hard! But he was right, especially when it came to relationships. A person will break your heart, it will heal. If they break your head (trust issues, abuse etc) it may not heal. Listening to my head has saved me from my heart being broken countless times. And has also saved me from what might have been years of therapy.

So, I want to know .... What is the best advice you have ever gotten (or given)?

First of all, let me start by saying that your father is a very wise man. The best piece of advice I have ever received was probably when my grandma was dying in the hospital and I got to see her before they took her off life support and it was: "Don't be afraid, you can't afford to act like a boy any longer. You must kill the boy before you can start being a man. Life is hard and cruel, but you must face these truths as a man and not hide from them as a boy. Only then can you truly start to live."

I can only hope that the last words I speak on my death bed will be as profound and inspiring as your grandmas were.
Thank you for your kindness. My grandma may have been hard on me at times, but she was also loving and smart and the closest thing to a mother I had, and I hold her last words to me very close to my heart and try to think back upon them when life dishes out another cruel truth.

He was also an abusive man who's own words came back to haunt him later in life. A day came when I had to make a decision to listen to my heart (because family is family and he's your father) or listen to my head (because one more year of abuse from him might ruin me forever.) I chose to listen to my head and have not spoken to him in over 15 years. The last words I spoke to him were "I am going to listen to my head, my heart will heal."

My heart has healed. My head (internal and external) still has scars from him but they are getting smaller with each passing year.

I apologize for my misinterpretation. The best advice tends to come from those that wish us harm. My father was a good-for-nothing drunk who would beat me for 'giggles', he would say, and to remind me I was a mere boy and that I was weak, so I can concur with your pain. I think that's why my grandma said what she said. Let me say you are a very brave woman and you would do well to remind yourself of that every day and to not take s**t from anyone like your father ever again. Forever move forward, never falter, and never look back.

There is knowledge to be found in suffering. If only you can look past the scars and see them for what they truly are: lessons.

You didn't interpret it wrong. He was a wise man. He just didn't realize he was giving his wisdom to his daughter, who was listening and absorbing it, and wouldn't pick and choose who she used it on. I stand by my opinion that it was the best advice I was ever given. It's just too bad I had to use it on him.

I have recently went through a lot of trust issues so I believe I am eligible to give out a beautiful advice given to me by a wise one :). This is for people who break your heart as well as your mind.
The advice is: "Don't give them free rent in your head".
If you give them that then they will just move in and destroy your house for free. and you don't want to give them that satisfaction. So don't think much about these people and move forward.

It is good advice, to not let one live rent free within our minds. Thank you for sharing.

Never wait for life, always move forward even when you get knocked two steps back, keep moving forward and don't become a slave to envy. Do that and you can live free. Good advice thank you.

I love this!! I often find myself replaying scenarios where I have been wronged in the past. Wishing I had said something, or did something, different in that moment.

"Don't give them free rent in your head".

Or spending too much time worrying about what I will do in the future "if this happens, or, "if this doesn't happen."

"Don't give them free rent in your head".

It's a great reminder for all of us to live in the present and find beauty in this moment.

Thank you @Daniel

Too many of us, myself included, spend too much time looking towards the future, fearful. Looking back into the past, regretting it. But what we should be doing is looking at what is right in front of us in the present, free. Escape the chains of regret and become free to live. You are born into this world free, but over time the fears and regrets link like chains and stop us from being able to live. Little do you know, you are the one holding the key. You can set yourself free if only you will it.
