The initial success of the Sonic the Hedgehog game helped spawn a bevy of sequels and TV shows. Now, the movies are following suit, with Paramount confirming production of both a third Sonic movie and a Knuckles-centric TV show.
Yes, we said “third movie”. Even if the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 the film won’t be out until April 8, Paramount is investing heavily in this franchise. To that end, they confirmed the production of a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie for the big screen. Meanwhile, the streaming service Paramount + will receive a Knuckles spinoff for the small screen in 2023, with Idris Elba reprising the role of Knuckles the Echidna.
We will first see Knuckles in the sequel film and he’s not the only familiar character joining in the fun. In the original trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we saw the character of Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy). Balancing the new characters is the return of Jim Carrey, whose Dr. Robotnik is plotting to steal the Chaos Emeralds with some help from Knuckles.
In addition to the theater Sonic 2 film, an animated series called Sonic Prime will debut on Netflix this year. It looks like we’ll get our fill of Sonic on the big screen and small screen before Sonic’s next game, Sonic Frontiers, which is expected to arrive in late 2022.
