The hype for Elden Ring has been growing for a long time, and the recent trailer took that hype to the next level. Part of the reason for this hype is that game of Thrones screenwriter George RR Martin is helping create the story, but now he seems to be less involved than fans were hoping for.

This information comes from a low-profile interview that Martin gave to the local news station WTTW. He was on his way to receive an honorary doctorate from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism when he gave the interview and eventually the station asked him about Elden Ring.

Martin threw a bomb when he said, “My work on it was actually done years ago. These games are like movies. They take a long time to develop.” Adding salt to the wound, Martin also clarified: “They wanted to build a world … I worked out a pretty detailed background for them, and then they took it from there.”

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Like all readers of the A song of ice and fire you know, no living author does worldbuilding like Martin. But the interview seemed to make it clear that Martin was very direct in his creative input of him and doesn’t appear to have anything to do with “characters and plot”.

If you were hoping that Martin was a very hands-on game writer who had constant input, this news could be disappointing. But on the bright side, Elden Ring won’t distract Martin from working on the long-awaited book the winds of winter.
