The Indian telephone market had a difficult first quarter of the year. According to Counterpoint Research, manufacturers have pushed 38 million smartphones, 1% less than twelve months ago.

However, feature phone sales between January and March 2022 plummeted, dropping 39%. This brings the overall decrease in sales to 16%.

The first quarter of 2022 started off with a slow start due to the third wave of COVID in the Asian country, Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh revealed. The supply chain problems have affected all the main producers who have had to adopt different strategies to tackle the problem. Some manufacturers have decided to expand their supplier portfolios, while others have increased local sourcing.

However, the market is likely to remain stagnant in the second quarter due to the current COVID situation in China, which certainly won’t help bring manufacturing and logistics to pre-pandemic levels.

Realme was the only major brand that experienced an annual increase in sales, rising from fifth to third in the market.

The main reason for the company’s 40% increase is the adoption of Unisoc chipsets which have helped with sales of ultra-affordable devices, but Realme has also been aggressive in its online promotions, which have also helped drive growth.
