Android’s notification management system is already quite advanced and flexible, but it may soon gain some additional features. Android currently has features like Notification Channels, Notification Cooldown, Mode, and Notification Organizer. Now Google is apparently working on something called Notification Rules.

Notification rules could make Android alerts even more flexible

The notification rules were spotted in Android 17 Beta 3. According to the strings discovered by Android Authority, the rules can be app-based or person-based. The actions available when a given rule meets its criteria are: Silence, Block, Silence and Group, Highlight, Highlight and Alert. Some of these are definitely more self-explanatory than others. It looks like there will be a new way to highlight or prioritize certain notifications, perhaps in some visual way. Ultimately, the new Notification Rules feature could let you say not to receive a notification for calls from a certain contact, or perhaps receive a priority notification for messages from certain contacts.

It’s perhaps also interesting to note that traces of notification rules have also been spotted in some builds of Samsung One UI 9, meaning this likely won’t be a Pixel-exclusive feature.
