Exploration

Outside of that, Axiom Verge sounds like any other solidly designed metroidvania. In particular, I found the secrets really well hidden in crafty places around the levels. They often asked me to think outside the box with my power-ups on how to access it.

Speaking of power-ups, Axiom Verge features some really imaginative ones that are intelligently implemented in different areas of the map. I liked the little robot that I could send out to explore areas that were too narrow to enter.

I also loved the weapons I had at my disposal, as each weapon is truly unique from each other. Each gun also has practical value in reaching switches that are not accessible by other means.

Presentation

The perfect presentation of Axiom Verge nails his attempt to bring retro imagery into the modern era. Rod of the axiom opt for classic pixel art to give the impression of a game you may have played 25 years ago. However, modern technology allows artists to create truly impressive sprites.

The boss fights serve as a highlight for the visual style of the game. Their towering sprites are not only beautifully detailed, but thoroughly well animated. It’s great to see this timeless craft still implemented by those who are passionate enough to commit. And, Axiom Verge represents one of the best arguments for the continued existence of pixelated images.

That said, the ambitious scope of the game’s size hinders its aesthetic variety. Classic metroidvanias like Super Metroid have nearly every room in their meandering mazes showing their own visual identity. This makes it much easier to keep a mind map of where to return after finding the required upgrade.

I found myself struggling with the familiar-looking corridors and backgrounds that characterize most of the Axiom Verge map. But at least I never got tired of the incredible soundtrack. It takes on a vibrant psychedelic techno vibe that perfectly matches the game’s alien tone.

Final verdict

Axiom Verge respects the legacy of the games that inspired it, while carving out its own identity with some rich innovations to this classic formula. I spent hours navigating the game’s expansive map while drooling on the next desirable power-up and moving on to the next jaw-dropping boss fight. Axiom Verge deserves its place alongside the best of the genre.
