Fighting game community
Initially created as a joke, a demo of Divekick has gained popularity in the fighting game community (FGC) and with the support of the FGC, Divekick has expanded into a full game boasting 15 characters. Each character in Divekick parodies a person or character in fighting game history, lifting their signature divekick from the classic fighters’ move set.
Take Dr. Shoals, a slightly veiled comedy about the infamous Doctor Doom, which borrows his foot-dipping technique from Doom’s appearance in the Marvel vs. Capcom, or Kung Pao, Mortal Kombat’s Kung Lao Divekick dispatch.
Other characters like S-Kill and Jefailey take inspiration from real-life FGC members Seth Killian and Alex Jebaily and push them to the extreme. For example, every time Jefailey wins a round, his head gets bigger to fit his inflated ego, until it becomes bigger than the rest of his body.
Divekick squeezes jokes into every possible place, from alternating color characters and scenarios, loading screens and more. One of my favorite features is the fraud detector, which appears when someone is about to get 5-0’d. On the other hand, if a player gets four round wins and continues to lose the next four, the choke detector starts to go off.
There are no gameplay consequences for these detectors; they only ignite the pride of the players, a staple of fighting game culture. For those in the know, Divekick offers a lot of humor and history, but for those unfamiliar with FGC, Divekick has plenty of other pop culture jokes and references.
