More driven by history
History has always been an afterthought for the DOOM franchise. You are a soldier and you are fighting the demons of hell. Anything beyond this is just a showcase.
That’s why it’s a little disappointing that DOOM Eternal is a more story-based game. After brutally shooting and tearing apart a fast-paced level, your reward is usually just watching your character witness a boring display from boring characters.
If that’s not exciting enough, you can read each entry in the code to uncover a mythology with hell, aliens, and religion. Is it ambitious? Safe. But that’s pretty much the last thing I wanted from my fun “brainless shooting” game.
Then again, DOOM Eternal is far less foolish than its predecessor.
Both courage and glory
The core DOOM experience remains the same: kill the demons before they kill you. When an enemy is weakened enough, you can perform a “glorious kill”. These are victims apparently inspired by the Brutal Doom mod and such kills provide health bonuses.
Between the health bonuses and the fact that you’re invincible during a glorious kill, these moves aren’t just for show. They are one of the only ways you can stay alive while battling horde after horde of demons.
In addition to glorious kills, you must master the use of the chainsaw. And while it provides its gory fun, it leads to one of the most annoying things in DOOM Eternal: resource management.
