The 2016 DOOM included a kind of gun-shaped safety blanket. That gun never ran out of ammo, which meant you could still shoot to get out of any sticky situation. And it usually wasn’t long before I found more ammo for your most powerful weapons.
In DOOM Eternal, that gun is gone. No more infinite ammo. Also, ammo is much more scarce in this game than its predecessor. Your only hope is to master the use of the chainsaw.
Chainsaw kills produce ammo drops in the same way that glory kills produce health drops. While you have to find fuel to use the chainsaw on larger enemies, it regenerates enough to use it on smaller enemies.
In some cases, this means you may have to keep goblins and zombies around while battling a larger enemy. When you need more ammo, you can always chainsaw the kids and get back into the main fight.
