The Ancient Gods – Part One includes a nice selection of new content. While there aren’t any new weapons or much in the way of additional enemies, it still looks cool. This is largely the result of the three new levels players will travel to. Each is filled with new content, containing a wide range of environments to explore. In total, you can expect to spend around six hours tackling the missions. That’s a long time, and it helps add real value to the set.
Just like in the base game, the gameplay in the DLC is fast-paced and intense. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, the studio stayed true to what works. In fact, the team has focused even more on this engaging play cycle to keep things as exciting as possible. The biggest change comes with difficulty. Those who haven’t played Doom Eternal in a while may have a hard time updating with the expansion. The enemies are tougher and each encounter is a desperate struggle for survival.
However, other areas aren’t that impressive. The platforming sections are as difficult as the combat, but much more frustrating. The jump sections were already one of the most annoying parts of Doom Eternal. However, these elements are even worse in The Ancient Gods – Part One. Since the mechanic of the jump isn’t as rigid as the shooting, it doesn’t offer players the same control. Failing to complete a platforming section also makes the Doom Slayer less powerful. Ultimately, this part of the game is unrewarding and unsatisfactory.
