New friends, compelling enemies
Judgment features a diverse cast of characters, each with their own goals and ambitions to achieve. While some are more important than others, there’s a good chance a character has meaning in some way. These supporting actors make the main character, Takayuki Yagami, stand out and shine as the story progresses.
Yagami is a fairly normal protagonist. Capable, intelligent and talented, he is also imperfect in some respects. Personally I found him extremely nice. However, the influences surrounding it are what makes this game special. The characters contained in the side content can also carry an emotional weight in Kamurocho.
Secondary cases and content
Typically, most games within the Yakuza world feature enough content to keep players busy for dozens of hours. Judgment continues this trend with many secondary cases to be completed outside of the main story. You get these cases from various people around town. Occasionally you come across secondary content while browsing.
The side cases are really well made and feature varying degrees of tone intensity. Doing a side job in Judgment could have you track down the lost cat of a Yakuza leader or even take down a trio of kinky criminals harassing the city. In my experience, these cases often distract me from the main storyline and interrupt progress until they are resolved. However, that’s not a bad thing at all.
There are also many other distractions in Kamurocho. Arcade, drone racing and collectibles can be found around every corner. The arcades also feature full games from the Sega library that are easy to get lost in for quite a while. Additionally, Yagami can also make friends with various people, leading to simple, but often funny mini-stories at the end.
These friends leads typically exist to give you a reason to visit restaurants and shops. However, these little missions can provide a lot of useful gameplay touches that help you in your game.
