Criticism

While these two aspects of the game are unique, they create some problems. The start of a round can be very slow, as players tend to pick points on the map that give them enough space and time to loot before committing. The chaos that comes with abandoning a plane and finding other players alighting next to you makes for a much more lively start.

When you manage to fight in Ring of Elysium, it’s really addicting and puts you on the edge of your seat. The shooting is great, the headshot audio is very satisfying, the terrain is varied and it looks stunning, with the exception of the ash wall, which for some reason looks like it came from the 90s.

The dynamic climate creates a very different feeling depending on whether it is calm and sunny or a torrential downpour with lightning lighting up the surroundings. Stormy weather is really, really well done, better than any other battle royale. Because of these things, each engagement feels unique. There just need to be more.

As for the finish, trying to get on the helicopter is tough. It’s an interesting challenge, but not a very satisfying one. Maybe they just need to improve the final scene, giving it more drama. Or incentivize yourself to be the first to enter, at least that would create some urgency aboard the helicopter.

Right now you have to make your way across an entire island, climb the ladder of death to get on the helicopter and then … wait for the others to join you. It is disappointing.

Unique kit

The third unique element that Ring of Elysium has is the ability to choose a unique kit at the start of the round. Currently you can choose between hang gliding, BMX and grappling hook. In contrast to the other two features, this one is fantastic. It sets Ring of Elysium apart from other battle royale and creates incredibly fun gameplay.

The different kits create different playing styles, which, again, creates variety in a very repetitive genre. You can get out of a difficult spot by jumping off a cliff and sliding off, do stunts with your BMX as you whiz across the ground, or whiz between buildings to get into advantageous positions with the grappling hook. These skills alone are reason enough to give Ring of Elysium a try.
