A serious tone

Like character design, the tone of a story is extremely subjective. And Marvel has created some great serious stories over the past 50+ years.

However, the MCU has made Marvel mostly synonymous with lighter and funnier characters and stories. This is part of what makes the serious tone and story of this game so jarring.

It’s not that every character has to have a million lines or that every story has to be as irreverent as Thor: Ragnarok. But a Marvel game that plays everything so damn seriously often comes across as just another boring action title filled with throwaway characters.

Boring and repetitive

When you try to copy the best of Destiny, you are bound to get some of the worst elements as well. And this comes in the form of boring and repetitive missions.

Crystal Dynamics tries to keep things fresh with different characters, abilities, environments and enemies. But at the end of the day, your missions turn into wiping out your enemies and / or completing the narrative equivalent of conquering a territory.

And if you scratch the surface, most environmental projects look like the same combination of corridors and open spaces with different filters applied to them. Although Crystyal Dynamics has promised that the full game has a lot more to it than the beta, these first impressions don’t inspire much hope.
