Earlier this month, a rumor surfaced that, for the first time ever, Apple would separate an iPadOS version from an iOS version this year, releasing iPadOS 16 about a month after iOS 16.
Today, Apple itself confirmed just that. In a statement provided to TechCrunchthe company said this:
This is a particularly important year for iPadOS. As a stand-alone platform with features designed specifically for iPad, we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on their own schedule. This fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS, as version 16.1 in a free software update.
The aforementioned early August rumor pointed to the culprit behind the delay as Stage Manager’s new multitasking feature, which will only be available on iPads with Apple M chips.

Meanwhile, Apple has released iPadOS 16.1 beta to developers. This would be the first time a .1 version has been launched instead of a .0 version, so it looks like it’s the year of previews for Apple’s tablet software.
That said, iOS and iPadOS could actually sync again with this move, with iOS 16.1 being released at the same time as iPadOS 16.1. Either way, iPhones will have an edge in enjoying the new branch.
