India is in discussions with Apple to start production of iPads, according to two sources cited by CNBC. Cupertino is in discussions with government officials about whether the plant near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, could start production of tablets, but no concrete plans have been finalized yet.

Apple considers moving iPad production to India

Since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, Apple has been considering diversifying its factories to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing. We’ve already seen the Indian plant resume production of AirPods and Beats, as well as the vanilla iPhone 14, which was the first: until now, the factory only assembled older models.

The sources revealed that the lack of highly skilled talents and people with experience in building highly complex mobile devices is the main reason why Apple is reluctant to move iPad production to India.

Currently, only 10% of all iPhones are manufactured by the Foxconn plant in Chennai, with only 5% of all iPhone 14 devices coming from this plant. The transition will be slow, but Apple will continue to expand its network of plants with production in Vietnam, Malaysia and even the United States.
