A few hours ago the latest versions of Apple’s mobile operating systems started rolling out to all supported devices. We are talking, of course, of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2.
With these versions, Freeform makes its debut. This is a new app designed for “creative brainstorming and collaboration,” according to Apple. It allows you to visually organize and arrange content on a “flexible canvas”, with built-in sharing and collaboration options. “A wide range of files” can be added and previewed online without ever leaving the tab. Freeform boards are stored in iCloud, so they sync across devices.

In addition, Apple Music Sing, the previously announced karaoke function, is also integrated into these versions. There’s a new option that expands the total number of iCloud data categories protected using end-to-end encryption to 23, including iCloud Backup, Notes and Photos, new settings that let you hide the wallpaper or notifications when viewing Always-On is enabled on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, new Sleep, Medication, and Activity widgets, and SharePlay support in Game Center for multiplayer games so you can play with people you’re on a FaceTime call with.

You also get a number of bug fixes and various improvements, including better searching in Messages, news articles in Weather related to that location, Participant sliders in Notes that let you see real-time indicators when others update notes shared, AirDrop that automatically returns to Contacts Only after 10 minutes to prevent unwanted requests to receive content and Crash Detection optimizations on iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models.
iPads gain external display support for up to 6K resolution on 12.9-inch iPad Pro (5th generation and later), 11-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation and later), and iPad Air (5th generation), drag and drop and drop files and Windows onto a connected display and vice versa, and support for using up to four apps on the iPad display and four on the external one.
Fixed an issue causing multitouch gestures to become unresponsive when using the Zoom accessibility feature, and tracking notifications now warn you if an AirTag that is separated from its owner is nearby and recently beeped to indicate which is moving.
These updates also fix more than 30 security vulnerabilities, which makes it all the more important to install new software as soon as possible. Since Apple generally doesn’t do phased rollouts, iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 should be available to everyone now. If you haven’t received a notification yet, you can manually check for an update and the download should begin immediately.
