Apple’s announcement of the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus today contained a lot of little tidbits aside from the phones themselves. We’ve already told you about the arrival of Apple Pay in South Korea, effectively ending a near-monopoly held by Samsung in the country in the realm of mobile payments.

But there was another revelation hidden in the news as well, and this one has to do with satellites. Apple’s Emergency SOS satellite service will expand to six additional countries starting later this month.

These are Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal. This will double the number of countries where the satellite-supported emergency communication service is available, as it has so far been operational in six other countries: the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Starting in a few weeks, there will be 12 in total.

Apple wants us to remember that Emergency SOS via Satellite only works outdoors, in open spaces with a clear view of the sky. Performance can be affected by obstacles such as surrounding trees or buildings, and messages sent using this route will take longer to send, of course, as they have to go through space and back.
