Huawei unveiled the new foldable Mate Xs 2 in May and we brought first impressions and practical experience back to the field. Back then the device was on limited offer, but now Huawei is taking it to store shelves and we’ve got our hands on a unit.

The Mate Xs 2 comes in three colors and our unit is white. The finish on the back is leathery but as the phone folds outward, the color is more of an afterthought. However, it feels nice on the hands when the Mate is open.
We love how thin the phone is at its base – it’s just 5.4mm, with the camera protrusion doubling it to 11.1mm, which is also the total thickness of the folded phone. The panel is manufactured by BOE and we love the fact that it has virtually no creases – we had to try to find a few.

The open 7.8 “screen has no glass to protect it from the elements, but has a pre-applied plastic shield. It already has a few small scratches which thankfully are not visible when the device is used.
When the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is folded, the front becomes a 6.5-inch screen, while the back remains dark. However, it can be used as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the main cameras. We’ll go into more depth in our full review to determine if HarmonyOS 2.0 has features that enable the second display.
Thankfully, there is a special protective case in the retail box that covers the back of the display.

The Huawei ecosystem is becoming more and more feature-rich and this phone comes with Petal Search, Petal Maps and AppGallery and even offers app suggestions to download right on the home screen.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 has an attractive form factor and promising cameras. Its foldable design is a bit vulnerable with the entire display exposed, but there’s no denying its impressive looks and functional benefits. We’ll go through all the use case scenarios in our review to determine if it’s worth the $ 1,999 price tag. Tests are already underway, so stay tuned.
