Huawei recently presented HarmonyOS Next with one major change: there will be no support for APK files, which are native Android apps. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, revealed that the new operating system is ready to roll out to end users, sparking confusion among Huawei owners around the world.

A week after the announcement, the company clarified that overseas units will not receive the new operating system. Mobile phones and tablets outside China will continue to use EMUI, a HarmonyOS lookalike, based on the Android Open Source project, but without Google services and apps and will continue to support native Android apps.

Huawei will maintain Android app support for overseas devices

According to China Mobile, Huawei “will continue to increase its support for developers around the world.” The company has developed a huge community of app developers, working exclusively to ensure that Android apps from third-party stores work properly on its phones without Google.

Repeatedly, Huawei executives have assured us, both officially and unofficially, that support for phones and tablets in global markets will continue to grow and that the company still considers itself one of the leading software and hardware manufacturers in the world of mobile phones.
