Nokia and Samsung have reached a new agreement on patented 5G technology that will see the Korean tech giant use Nokia’s “fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies”. The two companies previously signed a similar deal, which expired at the end of 2022.
Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry and we are delighted to have reached an amicable settlement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades of investment in research and development, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies. – Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies
The new agreement will see Samsung make royalty payments to Nokia for a multi-year period with an effective date of January 1, 2023. The actual terms of the agreement remain confidential.
Nokia currently holds over 20,000 patent families, of which 4,500 are deemed essential to 5G technology. The company has invested over 130 billion euros in research and development since 2000.
