introduction

OnePlus Open: the company’s first foldable smartphone is here. The Open features an incredibly clean design, two superb Dolby Vision OLED screens and three Hasselblad cameras on the back. And this is only the beginning. Let’s meet the OnePlus Open!

OnePlus Open impresses right from the start with a clean and elegant design, reminiscent of a portable digital camera from some time ago. It has all sorts of niceties like a ceramic protection panel, a vegan leather back, a thin metal frame, and a unique hinge design with less complexity and more durability. The phone is IPX4 rated for splash resistance.

Of course, everything about the Open revolves around its two displays. The main one is a 7.82-inch LTPO3 Flexi-Fluid AMOLED with a high resolution, 10-bit color depth, a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, and many other high-end specifications. The overlay screen is a 6.31-inch LTPO3 Super Fluid AMOLED with 20:9 aspect ratio, 10-bit color depth, 120 Hz dynamic refresh rate and Ceramic Guard protection.

The OnePlus Open uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and it should be among the last top-tier phones to use it before Gen 3 arrives in a couple of weeks. The Open will be available in a single configuration with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS4 storage.

OnePlus markets the Open as a premium cameraphone, and it certainly has the hardware to be one. On the back there are three Hasselblad cameras: a 48 MP OIS primary with a new Sony “Pixel Stacked” sensor, a 64 MP OIS telephoto with 3x optical zoom and 6x internal zoom and a 48 MP ultra wide-angle camera for both panoramic shots what a macro. .

There are two, well, let’s call them selfie cameras, both located inside small punch-holes in the two displays. The first is a 32MP camera inside the cover display and the other is a 20MP camera inside the foldable screen.

OnePlus Open comes with three powerful Dolby Atmos speakers, all kinds of connectivity features, and the latest OxygenOS 13.2 with improved foldable experience.

By the way, the OnePlus Open debuts side by side with the Oppo Find N3, two practically identical foldables excluding colors and splash resistance, but the Open is intended for global markets, while the Find N3 is expected to be limited to just one couple of countries. Furthermore, OnePlus and its Open are expected to become the first global competitor to Samsung’s Fold series.

It seems that nothing is missing on OnePlus Open. Yes, we can argue about the outdated Quad-Bayer selfie cameras, but let’s not forget that this is a foldable smartphone and you can use the triple main setup for mugshots. And that’s why we’ll let this topic slide. Maybe they will surprise us this time too, who knows.

The Open doesn’t have an IPX8 rating like the Fold5, meaning it shouldn’t be submerged in water. But it can handle splashes of water, rain, and even showers, which should be enough for most users.

Unboxing of OnePlus Open

The OnePlus Open arrives packaged in a rather large red paper box. And it’s full of deliciousness! Pick up the phone, of course. Although we received the black version, we should note that the EU, and perhaps other markets, will only receive the green model.

Inside the box you will find a SuperVOOC charger: 67W for Europe and 80W for all other markets. It comes with an 8A USB-AC cable painted in OnePlus’ signature red color.

OnePlus also provides a plastic case for the two halves of the phone. The back has a matching color and leather-like finish, so you won’t lose the premium look if you decide to use it.

Finally, the Open has a thin protective film applied to the cover screen. It’s great as a scratch protector, but it’s also a huge smudge magnet on top of the new, already highly durable Ceramic Guard screen glass, so we quickly removed the protector.
