Qualcomm has been making PC chipsets since last year, but its attempts so far have been pretty docile, most of which reuse designs from its phone products. Now a reputable source familiar with the matter says the company is finally about to take the project seriously and deliver a beastly desktop CPU. The report says we’ll see it in 2024 and it’s codenamed “Hamoa,” which would help us track future leaks about the chip.

The Hamoa chip will have 12 CPU cores in an 8 + 4 configuration. The large cluster is made up of eight high-performance cores, while the cluster of four is made up of energy-efficient cores. The chip will also support discrete GPUs.

Qualcomm will introduce 12-core desktop CPU to challenge Apple

Qualcomm will reportedly use Nuvia’s Phoenix core design, developed by former Apple engineers who worked on Apple’s current ARM-based chips. Qualcomm acquired startup Nuvia a while ago, so it’s no surprise that the company will use the new architecture, which in turn has promised a 50 to 100 percent performance boost with a 5 watt per core cap. This of course is based on the respective 2020 numbers.

Either way, the report suggests performance is “extremely promising,” so we may finally see the proper ARM-based Windows experience in the next couple of years.
