In early January, we heard that Apple was killing off the iPhone SE line. Now, less than two months later, we learn from the same source that it has been revived.

Prominent Apple-related rumors and analysis purveyor Ming-Chi Kuo is back today with a report claiming that the upcoming iPhone SE will be built on the chassis of the iPhone 14, with a 6.1-inch OLED display of the same size. . And so this would be the first iPhone SE with OLED and not LCD. The panel can be produced by BOE.

It will also be the first iPhone to use Apple’s in-house developed 5G baseband chip, presumably made in a 4nm process and only supporting Sub6 5G and not mmWave. The upcoming iPhone SE will act as a guinea pig for this chip — if there are any problems, they’ll show up in the cheaper iPhone, not any of the much more profitable expensive models.

It remains to be seen whether the iPhone 16 series in 2024 will use Apple’s 5G chip. For now, the main technical hurdles to overcome are related to mmWave and satellite communications, which the chip should support to enter the iPhone Pro.

Production of the next iPhone SE is expected to begin in the first half of 2024. Due to the slow transition from Qualcomm modems, Apple’s Qualcomm business is expected to decline “significantly” over the next 2-3 years.
