The vivo V40 is already on sale in Europe, and we finally have a review unit. The phone shares much in common with its six-month-old predecessor, but it upgrades to a 5,500mAh battery and brings a camera infused with Zeiss know-how.

The Vivo V40 we have is the Nebula Purple version, which is nice to hold. However, we were disappointed to find that there is no charger in the box. So if you want to take advantage of the phone’s 80W wired charging, you’ll have to get your own.

The V40’s design is bound to be polarizing with its unusual camera island. The same goes for the unusual back finish that looks like a cross between sand and satin.

Upfront is a cute 6.78″ AMOLED with curved sides. In a world of bezels and flat panels, curved screen lovers don’t have many options these days, so they should appreciate this one.

The 120Hz display looks bright, but the 4,500 nits listed in the official specs are probably not achievable in real life – we’ll definitely check that out. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset is apparently doing a great job and the phone feels very responsive in these first few minutes.

The Vivo V40 has two 50MP cameras on the back: a main one with a 1/1.56-inch sensor and an ultrawide unit with a 1/2.76 sensor. We’ll find out how they perform once the review is complete.

At this point, the Aura Light is a defining feature of the series, although it remains to be seen whether the new island-shaped camera will impact its performance.

The Vivo V40 starts at €500 and its hardware seems well-suited to the price. We’ll have to wait and see if its real-life performance lives up to expectations.
