One of the main disadvantages of sending photos via WhatsApp is the processing that goes on, significantly (and very visibly) reducing their size, resolution and quality. This, however, will finally be a thing of the past. At least the low-res aspect, that is. Very late, but finally here is the “HD photos”.

WhatsApp finally lets you send higher quality photos

In WhatsApp, “HD” in this case means up to 4096 x 2692 resolution. You also have the “standard” quality option for whatever reason, which will scale everything down to 1600 x 1052. Resolution is one thing, compression is another – and WhatsApp has kept quiet on the latter, not disclosing how much it will apply even to those “HD” photos. However, at least now they will have a higher resolution, which will still make them look better.

There’s a new HD icon, and when you hit it you’ll be able to select between the two quality presets mentioned above. All images will still be end-to-end encrypted, HD or not.

WhatsApp finally lets you send higher quality photos

The new feature is currently rolling out to all users worldwide, but the rollout is expected to take a few weeks to reach everyone. Support for “HD” video will follow shortly thereafter.
