SEGA today unveiled its first Sonic Central livestream event, honoring Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary this year, making several major announcements. You can watch the entire 12-minute presentation below, but here’s a quick rundown of everything announced.
The event was introduced by Ivo Gerscovich and Takashi Iizuka, Chief Brand Officer and Creative Director of Sonic the Hedgehog, respectively, who thanked the fans for their support.
Sonic Symphony 30th Anniversary Event
Sonic’s official 30th anniversary on June 23 will be celebrated with a free virtual music event for the entire symphony orchestra. It will feature music from Sonic games from the past 30 years, with special guest performances from rock band Crush 40, DJ Tomoya Ohtani and more. A special preview of the event will take place during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live! on June 10.
Sonic competing in Tokyo 2020
Have you ever wanted to compete like Sonic in Olympic events? Soon you will have your chance! In Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game, you can dress up your avatar as a Sonic and compete in 18 hilarious Olympic events. The game will arrive on all platforms on June 22nd and is now available for pre-order.
Sonic objects arriving at Two Point Hospital
Sonic is coming to Two Point Hospital, the 2018 business simulation game where you build a hospital from scratch. Sonic in-game items, character customization options, and hospital décor will be available for free in-game on July 30th.
Sonic the Fighters will be playable in Lost Judgment
This fall, 1996 arcade game Sonic the Fighters (known as the Sonic Championship outside of Japan) will be playable in Lost Judgment, the sequel to the Yakuza Judgment spinoff. Visit any Sega Arcade location in the game to play. Lost Judgment will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 on September 24.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate remaster announced
Sonic Colors, the 2010 game for the Nintendo DS and Wii, is about to be remastered for modern platforms. Sonic Colors: Ultimate will arrive on PC (via Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 7. Pre-orders can now get an exclusive “Baby Sonic” keychain and other bonus items.
Sonic Colors: The animated short Rise of the Wisps coming this summer
A two-part animated short called Sonic Colors: The rise of clumps was heralded by the return of Sonic voice actor Roger Craig Smith. Out this summer, this is the first in a series of short-form animations coming soon that will feature full dialogue from Sonic’s voice cast. In The rise of the tuftsSonic and Tails travel to Sweet Mountain where they team up with Jade Ghost’s will-o’-the-wisp to release the will-o’-the-wisps that have been captured by Dr. Eggman.
Sonic Origins compilation coming in 2022
Sonic Origins, a new compilation including Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, will arrive on modern platforms in 2022, with added content and features.
Sonic Mania, Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Forces on cloud gaming
Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing are now available on the Amazon Luna cloud platform. On June 1st, Sonic Mania, Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Forces will arrive at Sony’s PlayStation Now cloud games subscription service.
Special events are coming up for Sonic mobile games
Several special events on Sonic’s mobile games are coming this year.
Sonic Dash will have a pirate-themed party starting in May, where players will be able to unlock Pirate Sonic and Captain Shadow, as well as special rewards.
Sonic Forces: Speed Battle mobile will allow players to fight as Super Sonic this summer, with private races coming later this year as part of a limited-time event.
Sonic Racing on Apple Arcade adds classic characters, cars, and three new tracks to a classic zone, along with some old-school remixes.
And both Sonic Forces and Sonic Dash are adding a special character to their roster for Halloween: the Werehog from 2008’s Sonic Unleashed game.
The Sonic Prime animated series has been teased
Joe Kelly, one of the showrunners of the upcoming Netflix animated series of 2022 Sonic Prime, gave a brief preview of the project. “We’ve worked very hard to bring fans something they’ve never seen before in a Sonic series,” he said, after noticing that he and the rest of the Man of Action Entertainment writers’ collective are working on Sonic Prime created Cartoon Network Ben 10 and Disney’s characters Great Hero 6.
“Over the course of 24 episodes, Sonic will be catapulted into a high-speed adventure through the strange and mysterious Shatterverse. It is up to Sonic to save the universe and experience moments of self-discovery and redemption along the way. Sonic Prime will have its world premiere in 2022. We look forward to taking this journey with you and sharing more information with you at a later time.
New merchandise for Sonic’s 30th anniversary
The brand new Sonic products will arrive this year.
On the toy front, there’s a Giant Eggman Robot Battle Set coming from JAKKS Pacific in July.
If bling is your thing, an elegant collection of Sonic the Hedgehog 30th anniversary jewelry comes from King Ice, “for fans who have gotten into hip hop culture.”
For the word nerds, the hard cover in color Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-iacovering 30 years of video games, arrives from Dark Horse on November 23rd.
Finally, from APMEX comes commemorative coins in gold and silver for Sonic’s 30th anniversary.
New Sonic game anticipated for 2022
Gerscovich concluded the livestream by promising more announcements coming later this year, before being interrupted by Iizuka, who said he had one more thing to show fans.
We were then treated to a very short teaser for a new 3D video game from developer Sonic Team for 2022. The teaser shows Sonic running through a forest, exploding forward with an enhanced effect, and snapping into a ring shape that transforms into a rune.
No title has been revealed for the game, but the teaser claims it will arrive on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Nintendo Switch.
