Yesterday, Sony’s latest State of Play gave us an idea of upcoming games, including the promising Deathloop title for PC and PS5. We got to see nine minutes of gameplay of this looping action game and you can check out those nine minutes below!
Deathloop’s premise is that your Colt character is stuck in a day that keeps repeating. This is the same narrative formula that has given us great films ranging from groundhog day to Edge of tomorrow.
Like in those movies, the gameplay involves you trying to figure out how to get out of the loop. And in the nine-minute cutscene, we see Colt chasing one of eight targets he must kill before his day begins once more.
In general, everyone loses their memory when the day goes to zero. The exception is Julia, a character who can serve as a powerful ally. In the preview, we see that eliminating certain targets will increase Colt’s power, making it easier for him to take out other enemies.
Normally, you lose the powers and gears you acquired during the previous cycle. By acquiring a substance known as Residuum from certain enemies, you can preserve selected powers and items. But you need to be aware of which equipment and skills will be most useful in your next cycle.
Perhaps the most useful skill is called Reprise. It allows you to rewind briefly when you get killed, even if you only get two uses per day. After that, your third death will forcefully restart the cycle.
Deathloop will be released on September 14th. Will you take it back on the first day? Let us know in the comments!
