Since Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Years came, I've just wanna ask if there is a particular food you love or a favorite that gets served during specific holiday? Like a food you always looked forward to during those occassions?

There's this dish we only make once a year since it's extremely time consuming and requires a lot of muscle power for hours of mixing.

We usually make it in big batches (and I really meant BIG) to last from Christmas 'till New Year. It's a dessert called Ube Halaya, and honestly, the sore arms are worth it every time.

My favorite holiday food will always be New Year's noodle. Simple but meaningful. Long life, long career, long relationship, just as the long noodle.

that looks delicious! 🤤 do you use the ube halaya for anything else? I had some ube brownies from a popup market, and the ladies told me that they make their own ube halaya and use it for their brownies.

We actually use Ube Halaya in many ways! When I'm not eating it on its own, I use it as a spread on toast.

It can also be used in Ice Creams as a flavoring or a topping on dessert like in Halo Halo.

And I can attest that Ube Halaya Brownies are heaven in your mouth. You know what else is? Ube. Cake. 🤤

do you recommend buying it from the store? i don't know how to make ube halaya, but i've seen an ube spread at my World Market, and wondering if that's similar enough...

If you just want the Ube taste and to not spend a lot of time finding an authentic Ube Halaya (cause it's a bit pricier and hard to find), then I can recommend to go for the one at your World Market.

While Ube Spread is still made with Ube, it's a bit thinner and jam-like for easier spreading. It's also smoother and had a more uniform texture. Ube Halaya is thicker, creamy, and had more of a pudding consistency.

Personally, I prefer Ube Halaya than the spread.

As for the basic recipes, it only had 5 ingredients: grated ube, evaporated milk, condensed milk, margarine and salt. There are a lot of variations and some people like to add coconut milk and ube extract but as long as you have those 4 ingredients and a lot of arm strength, you should be good to go.

This recipe I found online is a bit similar to how my partner makes it, just replace the butter with margarine and we don't add coconut milk and ube extract:
