Mod a Game x Mod a App: Is the same process?

Hi guys.
A few days ago I read several guides here in the forum on how to mod a game. I chose a simple game to try = Hill Climb Racing. I got it. I tried using the same method to unlock premium features of a famous app, Duolingo. I couldn't, I got pretty lost in the process. There is no libilc2pp.so or anything like that. But, I found some files related to InApp purchases, such as InAppBilling.smali and InAppBillingService.smali. Honestly, I don't know what to do with it. Any tips or guides here on the forum that teach you how to mod an app for the purpose of unlocking premium features? What tools to use? all information will be helpful. Thanks.

This means the app should be modded via smali, it's a language similar to java and I'll think about posting a tutorial about it soon
