A text-based, plot driven, narrative game, with the occasional (rare) illustrations, set in a medieval world, with low-fantasy elements thrown in. Developed by Hosted Games, creators of games such as "Interactive Bonbons", and "The Vampire Regent".
Review:
The Great Tournament is a take on a setting that has been explored many times already, in all sorts of media, but it manages to not fall into a state of being cliche, or, at the very least, it's certainly not boring. The game focuses around a young peasant boy, who's personality and attributes are for you to customize, and it follows his journey through a key period of his life, journaling the transition from peasant, to squire to a legendary and charming knight, and then onto even greater things and titles. In terms of the storyline, it's highly engaging, either completely devoid of dull moments, or with very few of them to be found. That being said, it is almost completely lineal, with the choices made by the player having a small impact on the grand scheme of things. When it comes to the characters, the same issue that the plot has reappears, though in a different way. All of them are engaging in different ways, the interactions between them and the protagonist always interesting and entertaining. Though there is a noticeable drawback. Those interactions, while the player has the freedom to choose how their character will react, feel slightly superficial, yet another sign of the lineal structure of The Great Tournament.
Would you recommend this to other users? If games such as those made by Hosted Games or Choice Of Games are of interest to you, giving The Great Tournament a chance might be worth it for you. But some things must be kept in mind. Number one, don't expect a story which multiple branching paths and impactful choices. And number two, be prepared for a short playthrough experience. All of that being said, it's still highly entertaining, and while not the best of the bunch, calling it boring wouldn't be true in the slightest. I consider it to be worth a try.
