Yesterday, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun posted images of the upcoming Mix Fold 3 and hinted at its slim design. The company is now revealing more concrete numbers and some additional details about the new foldable, which will be launched on August 14th.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 will measure 4.93mm unfolded and 9.8mm when folded. For comparison, the Mix Fold 2 measured 5.4mm and 11.2mm respectively, while the current thinnest horizontal fold, the Honor Magic V2, is 4.7mm and 9.9mm.
The redesigned hinge of Xiaomi Mix Fold 3
This means that Xiaomi is about to steal the title from Honor and it has come with an extensive redesign of the hinges. The new hinge is made of high-strength steel and wear-resistant carbon ceramic. The new 3-stage connecting rod design is more complex with 14 moving parts and 198 total moving parts, compared to the Mix Fold 2’s 2-stage design with 8 out of 87 total moving parts.
The hinge can hold the phone semi-open at any angle between 45° and 135°. Its durability has been tested by TÜV Rheinland, which has verified its resistance to 500,000 folds.
