As March 31 approaches, many Nintendo fans have dubbed the date as the day Mario officially dies. This is because the company is pulling the plug on a series of celebratory releases at the end of the month.
Last year, Nintendo launched Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. as part of the series’ 35th anniversary celebration. However, it also confirmed at the time that these products would only be available until March 31.
Recently, the company announced once again that all of these products will be withdrawn from sale in early April. Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be withdrawn from digital stores and physical copies will no longer be produced. In the meantime, the servers of Super Mario Bros. 35 will be shut down and Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. will no longer be produced.
This has led to fans announcing on sites like Twitter that March 31st is officially the day Mario will die. This is despite the fact that many more Mario games will still be available.
Nintendo’s move to eventually retire these games is still confusing and has not been adequately explained. It is strange for any company to arbitrarily restrict their products. Hopefully, any fans who want to get their hands on it will be able to do so in the next week or so.
