Secondary missions
While nothing original, the Grim Dawn story contains a couple of interesting side missions led by characters seeking revenge or frantically trying to persevere in this post-apocalyptic era. The main campaign takes the hero on a track across the vast continent. Eventually a separate realm opens up inspired by ancient mythologies. The player has the opportunity to align with unique factions, each with their own side missions and perks. Combined with the various character builds, Grim Dawn is immensely replayable, although the main campaign can be completed in around 25 hours.
Game
Grim Dawn uses the engine from Titan Quest, a game originally released in 2006. As a result, Grim Dawn is a spiritual successor to Iron Lore’s good, if flawed, ARPG. In fact, a good number of Grim Dawn’s systems, enemies, and locations directly steal Titan Quest. Now, in all honesty, Crate Entertainment manages to improve practically every single department. Grim Dawn embarrasses the 2018 port of Titan Quest.
Grim Dawn sticks to the standard point-and-click control scheme popularized by the subgenre’s early offerings. Again, the wheel is simply polished rather than reinvented. Surprisingly, the game has controller support and works quite well.
