Today Apple set a new record. It’s the first time the company has released a Rapid Security Response (RSR) update to the public, and not just to beta testers or developers running pre-release developer builds of its mobile operating systems.

Both iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 are currently receiving this RSR update. The implementation will be completed within the next 48 hours. Upon installing RSR, your iPhone or iPad will show a “(a)” in the About section, so you’ll be on iOS 16.4.1(a) or iPadOS 16.4.1(a).

Apple releases its first Rapid Security Response update, now available for iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1

RSR updates can be applied automatically by default. Not all of them will require a restart, but some might, and as such you’ll be asked when they’re done. You can choose to turn off the automatic installation of RSR updates through Settings, but you may not want to.

This is because these offer major security improvements over the usual software updates. They are used to mitigate certain threats more quickly, especially those that have been exploited or reported as existing in the wild. So, for the sake of your device’s security, maybe it’s best to let it happen the way Apple wants it to.

Today’s RSR update takes just a couple of minutes to download and install, and requires a reboot. Going forward, RSRs will only be available to those running the absolute latest versions of iOS and iPadOS.
