Google is apparently busy working on merging Android and Chrome OS, according to a new report today. Specifically, the company is trying to “transform Chrome OS into Android” to compete with the iPad.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense, but a lot of things Google does from time to time don’t, so that doesn’t mean it’s not true. An anonymous source claims that Google plans to “completely migrate Chrome OS to Android,” whatever that means.

Google is reportedly merging Chrome OS with Android

Back in June, Google announced that Chrome OS would start using parts of Android, but this report now claims that the merger will go even deeper.

We still don’t understand how this will make Google compete better with the iPad. iPads run iPadOS, basically a branch of iOS with some tablet-specific features. Google could have added such tablet-specific features to Android in recent years. How exactly will Chrome OS help? Chrome OS is an operating system designed for budget laptops. iPads are expensive tablets: do you understand our confusion?

Anyway, this is apparently a multi-year project so don’t expect anything to come of it anytime soon. When finished, future Chromebooks will run the new Android that integrates Chrome OS. Or something like that. This morning a rumor told us that Google is working on a Pixel laptop and that it could run this new Android/Chrome OS mashup.
