Sony has yet to release a 100+ megapixel sensor designed for smartphones, but one is reportedly on the way. The company will take an interesting approach: instead of targeting the flagship market, its first 100MP sensor will target the premium mid-range, according to the leakster. Digital chat station.
The sensor will presumably be part of the Sony IMX8 series. The series recently debuted with the IMX800, a 54MP 1 / 1.49 “sensor used in the Honor 70 series. DCS it doesn’t share details on the 100MP sensor, so we can only speculate. Since it’s aimed at mid-rangers, it won’t be the largest or most capable of Sony’s line-up.
The company is also working on an IMX9 series, writes the leakster, which will be more capable and collide with some impressive sensors coming from competitor Samsung. Samsung is already promoting the HP1 200MP sensor, which is expected to be featured on phones such as the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra (due next month) and potentially the Galaxy S23 Ultra (coming next year). That’s not all, Samsung is also working on a sensor even bigger than the GN2, an already huge 1 / 1.12 “sensor.

Of course, Sony already has a huge sensor of its own, the 1.0 “sensor used in the Xperia Pro-I. That sensor was originally designed for the RX100 VII camera and Sony had trouble fitting it into an acceptable thickness for a phone. (more details in our review).
