The threads arrived earlier this week and people were signing up with their Instagram username, as the Twitter alternative is powered by photo-centric social media. However, many have found that it is not possible to delete the account on Thread once created; you can only disable it. Deleting your Threads username will automatically apply to your Instagram profile as well, deleting everything.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, revealed that Meta is aware of the issue and is working on a workaround and suggested users deactivate their account for now.

Threads allows users to post text messages, videos, short GIFs and embed Instagram posts into threads. They can also like, comment, repost, and share posts, but many other features are still missing. Deactivating the account would hide the profile and any published content, and users can also decide to switch to privacy.
The executive said that Threads is powered by Instagram and that’s why users use only one account. They’ll be able to use more robust search soon, and we expect to see hashtags, curated listings, and editing tools for attachments ahead of publication.

There’s also the issue that Threads isn’t GDPR compliant for now, meaning people in the European Union can’t use social media. They could opt for a VPN solution, but that would compromise their data if they passed through a country with weaker privacy laws.
