Twitter has closed its offices until Monday, November 21, according to an official statement to staff. The company did not provide a rationale for the decision, but reports say there are simply too many people quitting. Elon Musk has been quoted as saying “the best people stay” and he’s not “super worried.”

Musk’s plans to make Twitter more financially stable included selling a verified blue check to anyone willing to pay $8 a month, as well as laying off half of the workforce to try to minimize expenses.

Twitter staffers had until yesterday, Nov. 17, to sign a long-hours pledge or walk away with three months of severance pay. Former employees are tweeting that between 74% and 90% of the workforce have decided to ask for compensation instead of being “extremely hardcore” and going back to the office.

A former worker told the BBC they expect fewer than 2,000 people will remain, which is about a quarter of the initial workforce of 7,500. They also revealed that the entire team was fired, while another employee said:

I didn’t want to work for someone who threatened us over and over via email that only ‘exceptional tweeps should work here’ when I was already working 60-70 hour weeks.”

Later, the new owner and CEO went on his usual tweet-bender, saying that to make a small social media fortune, you should start with a big one, then followed up by revealing that Twitter has hit a new all-time high in usage. then he posted a pirate flag emoji and ended with a grave meme, depicting Twitter celebrating the death of Twitter.
