How to use?
We'll need to cover some compass jargon first. The part of the compass that always moves and points north is called the map (with N, S, E, and W marked and a beveled edge with a series of numbers on it). There is a movable ring around the edge of the compass, called a bezel. A double red line at the top of the compass is called a guideline, and finally there is a small window above the compass which is often called the side window (as it is on the side of a real compass).
Navigating the side window couldn't be simpler. You point the guideline above the compass to where you want to go. Now, as long as you hold the compass flat in front of you with the faith line pointing in the direction you are going, you should always see the same number in the window as long as you are going in the correct direction. If you see a different number, turn until you see the same number.
The downside to the side window method is that you have to remember your number.
Navigating with the frame essentially works like using the side window, but the frame remembers your number for you. All you have to do is point the faith line above the compass to where you want to go, then wait for the map to stabilize and stop moving. Then, rotate the viewfinder until the double triangle on the edge of the viewfinder (the notch next to the zero number on the viewfinder) is enclosed in parentheses by the north arrow on the map. Now, as long as you hold the compass flat in front of you with the faith line pointing in the direction you are going, you should always see the north arrow inside the notch, as long as you are going in the correct direction. Otherwise, turn until you see the north arrow inside the notch.
Note that if you have properly adjusted the scope, the number in the side window is also the number directly in front of you at the front end of the grease line. In other words, if you rotate the bezel counterclockwise until the notch surrounds the north arrow, the 120 on the bezel would be at the end of the guideline. Note that on the map, the number displayed in the side window is 120. If you hold this compass and are heading in the direction of the course line, you would be on a course of 120.
By now you should have learned to go in the desired direction. But how do you get back? Easy! If you are thinking in terms of range, simply rotate until the north arrow points to the notch, but to the single triangle which is exactly opposite the notch. You are now shown where you come from.
The hardest part of using the compass isn't learning what the numbers mean and how to adjust the bezel. The most common mistakes are not keeping the compass flat and not going in the direction the power line points.
Large iron and steel objects can affect your Android device's magnetic sensor, causing it to point in the wrong direction. This is called a detour. If you suspect this is happening, simply move several meters away from the object and the problem should resolve itself.
