Slight problem. Game has been updated today with new content, and the MOD .apk won't connect to Google Play Games to update.
Is there a way around this; maybe using SB Patcher to temporarily reinstate the connection to the GP Games server to run the update, then disconnecting?

There's no way for unrooted devices to connect to ANY mod apk files with Google Play Services. The only link possible is with Facebook, if the game offers this possibility, otherwise if you don't want to lose your progresses, you can simply wait for an update (if not yet reported, report it here: Report outdated apk) and then install the newer version, when it'll be released, over the actual version you have installed.

Okay,,,,so, if I rooted my device??

You'd need to patch your device using Lucky Patcher or SB Patcher in order to allow installation of unsigned apk files, then you'd need to unsign the mod apk file and then install it, allowing Google Play Services login.
